Doctors Who Care
Doctors dedicated to the field of addiction medicine

"Doctors Who Care" is an ongoing public outreach program of the Federation of Private Medical Practitioners Associations Malaysia (FPMPAM). It aims to increase access to and improve the quality of addictions treatment in Malaysia.

The ?Doctors Who Care? program strives to educate the public to view drug addiction as a chronic disease, rather than a social ill or weakness. It is hoped that by raising awareness, more people suffering from substance abuse and chemical dependency will come forward to receive the help that they need to live drug-free. The key strategy is to encourage treatment of drug-addiction in a supportive family-orientated environment within the community. With this approach it is possible for the addict to return to useful and normal life as soon as possible during their period of recovery.

Concomitant with public outreach activities, the program also includes the development of training modules and continuing medical education courses on substance abuse treatment and counseling for doctors to expand the network of qualified addictionists in the country.

Mission

Run on a strictly not-for-profit basis, the mission of "Doctors Who Care" is to bridge the gap between wanting help and getting help. Specifically, through this website and the hotline run by FPMPAM, we strive to provide free, confidential referrals and information to those directly affected by substance abuse through their own use, or indirectly through the use of a friend or family member.  In support of this, we aim to:

  • Provide accurate information to the public and professionals on substance abuse, intervention, and treatment,
  • Raise awareness and educate the public about drug addiction as a chronic disease and available treatment options through public service campaigns and educational materials,
  • Offer free, confidential referrals to the public to qualified professionals through our national database,
  • Train and equip family doctors with the knowledge and tools to treat drug addiction through continuing medical education courses and workshops, and
  • Work in partnership with other medical bodies and the government to advance the field of addiction medicine in the country.
