Founding Chairman's Message

The world of the drug addict is cold, lonely and empty where those who are not addicted would never set a foot into. There is much reservation and ignorance as to what the so-called "normal" people, professionals and society can do to help.

Is addiction a medical disease or a moral aberration? The pros and cons of this issues have been debated around the world for decades. The battle has been long and hard. At the end of the day, it is clear that no one can honestly claim total victory. What is clear is that the battle against drug addiction cannot be fought alone or with a pre-fixed mindset. The addict needs his family, his community, and all the spiritual strength that he or she can muster to begin his path to recovery.

Research in medical science, and technology have done much to produce new medications and treatment to address the biochemical and physiological changes in the brain of patients with addiction However, medicine does not have monopoly over the recovery process. At most it can only be a complementary partner to a healing and reconciliation process that must involve man and God.

Regardless of what our individual stand is on the various debates concerning causes and treatment, the facilitator of this healing process must begin with the re-establishment of contact and effective communication between those who are lost in addiction and those trying to reach out to him. This, in essence, is what treatment is all about, and it requires compassionate engagement. It is about delivering hope and guidance to those who are hopelessly lost.

Education coupled with early intervention and prevention is the logical strategy that should work to break the chain of transmission of drug addiction. For this strategy to work we not only need the dedication of counselors, professionals, caregivers and those in government but indeed a whole nation of caring people sensitized to the fact that the individual effort of each and every one of us may be able to make that difference.
